The Monarch

Updated: Sep 9, 2022

“It came out!” Jetts said over the phone last week. “What do you mean?” I asked. “Emmie’s monarch is out. It’s hanging on the cocoon.”

My five year old Grand and I visited a Butterfly Farm in Deerfield, MA to celebrate the last week of summer along with the beginning of kindergarten. On our way through the gift shop, we noticed shelves of chrysalis’ for sale. Emmie picked the pale green one that looked as if someone (or Someone) had hand painted gold dots around the crest of the temporary transformation home.

When she and I arrived at her house, we used the self stick tape provided to position the cocoon under the cabinets in the kitchen. Her two year old sister, Fiona, was also excited to see this strange and transformative experiment.

Interestingly, the directions said not to “help” the butterfly out of the chrysalis. Its very struggle to escape the chrysalis is critical for its development and its freedom to fly. For several hours, the girls watched the monarch flutter over and over again, drying its wings and preparing to leave the chrysalis. Finally, the monarch was ready to fly, and fly it did! It landed briefly on a delighted Emmie before launching out into the yard and trees beyond that.

Lord, I know its such a little detail, but those gold dots were stunning! I kept staring at Your Handiwork and was speechless. I see Your imagination and attention to detail in nature which is stunningly beautiful and complex. Your Handiwork continually delights and inspires my soul. Thank You also for the transformational process that Holy Spirit does when we put our hope, faith, and trust in Jesus. It is a miracle indeed! Amen.

Now we look inside, and what we see is that anyone united with the Messiah gets a fresh start, is created new. The old life is gone; a new life emerges! Look at it! All this comes from the God Who settled the relationship between us and Him, and then called us to settle our relationships with each other. God put the world square with himself through the Messiah, given the world a fresh start by offering forgiveness of sins.
